چکیده

This paper series adopts particle modeling (PM) to simulation of dynamic fracture phenomena in homogeneous and heterogeneous materials, such as encountered in comminution processes in the mining industry. This first paper is concerned with the setup of a lattice-type particle model having the same functional form as the molecular dynamics (MD) model (i.e., the Lennard–Jones potential), yet on centimeter length scales. We formulate four conditions to determine four key parameters of the PM model (also of the Lennard–Jones type) from a given MDmodel. This leads to a number of properties and trends of resulting Young s modulus in function of these four parameters. We also investigate the effect of volume, at fixed lattice spacing, on the resulting Young modulus. As an application, we use our model to revisit the dynamic fragmentation of a copper plate with a skew slit [J. Phys. Chem. Solids, 50(12) (1989) 1245]. 2004 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved. A Numerical Simulation Study on the Kinetics of Asphaltene Particle Flocculation in a Two-dimensional Shear Flow

In the current study, the kinetics of asphaltene particle flocculation is investigated under a shear flow through numerical simulation. The discrete element method (DEM) is coupled with computational fluid dynamics (CFD) to model the agglomeration and fragmentation processes. In addition, a coalescence model is proposed to consider the attachment of colliding particles. The changes in mean asph...

Modelling the catalyst fragmentation pattern in relation to molecular properties and particle overheating in olefin polymerization

A two-dimensional single particle finite element model was used to examine the effects of particle fragmental pattern on the average molecular weights, polymerization rate and particle overheating in heterogeneous Ziegler-Natta olefin polymerization. A two-site catalyst kinetic mechanism was employed together with a dynamic two-dimensional molecular species in diffusion-reaction equation. The i...

Particle modeling of dynamic fragmentation—II: Fracture in single- and multi-phase materials

The second paper of this series adopts particle modeling (PM) to simulation of dynamic fracture phenomena in homogeneous and heterogeneous materials, such as encountered in comminution and blasting processes in mining industry. As the basis for such simulations, we first develop a new method to prevent particles from topologically interpenetrating themselves within the material domain, when act...

When the classical & quantum mechanical considerations hint to a single point; a microscopic particle in a one dimensional box with two infinite walls and a linear potential inside it

In this paper we have solved analytically the Schrödinger equation for a microscopic particle in a one-dimensional box with two infinite walls, which the potential function inside it, has a linear form. Based on the solutions of this special quantum mechanical system, we have shown that as the quantum number approaches infinity the expectation values of microscopic particle position and square ...

Transverse and longitudinal dynamic modeling of bimorph piezoelectric actuators with investigating the effect of vibrational modes

Bimorph piezoelectric cantilevered (BPC) actuators have recently received a great deal of attention in a variety of micro-electromechanical systems (MEMS) applications. Dynamic modeling of such actuators needs to be improved in order to enhance the control performance. Previous works have usually taken transv...
